Let’s be honest with each other for a minute. You didn’t just read that series. You survived it. Barely.
Somewhere around book three, the author stopped writing a story and started conducting a targeted campaign against you, specifically. You have evidence. You have grievances. You have a support group (it’s BookTok).
The goblin has prepared an official checklist. If you recognize yourself in three or more of the following, you may be entitled to emotional compensation.*
(You are not. There is no compensation. There is only the next book.)
1. You said “just one more chapter” and then watched the sun rise
The chapter ended on a cliffhanger. The next one was short, so it barely counted. The one after that ended mid-betrayal, and you couldn’t exactly stop there. Suddenly the birds were singing and you had a 9 AM meeting and one singular thought: worth it.
2. There is a specific character name you cannot say out loud
Not won’t. Can’t. Your throat closes. Your friends know not to ask. Someone at book club mentioned them casually last month and you had to go stand in the kitchen for a while.
3. You’ve gotten angry at a fictional government
Sustained, well-researched political opinions. About a kingdom that does not exist. You’ve said the words “well, if the council had just LISTENED-” with your whole chest. You would die for a rebellion that is made of paper.
4. The book hangover lasted longer than some of your relationships
You finished the series and then just… sat there. Staring. You picked up a new book, read the same paragraph four times, and put it down again like it had personally insulted you. Nothing tasted right for a week.
5. You’ve done the math on a fictional timeline more carefully than your own budget
You know exactly how many years passed between the prologue and the fall of the citadel. You have opinions about the map. You noticed the travel time discrepancy in book four and you’ve been quietly carrying it ever since, like a stone.
6. “Enemies to lovers” is not a trope to you. It is a lifestyle. It is a belief system.
You saw the two of them argue in chapter six and whispered “oh, they’re going to ruin my life,” and you were RIGHT, and you’d do it again.
7. You bought the special edition. Of a book you already own. Twice.
One to read, one to display, one because it has sprayed edges and you are only human. Your bookshelf is not a bookshelf anymore. It is a shrine with a lighting scheme.
8. An epilogue has made you cry in a public place
You knew better than to finish it on the train. You did it anyway. A stranger asked if you were okay and you held up the book like that explained anything. (It did. They nodded. They knew.)
The Official Diagnosis
If you checked three or more: congratulations, you’ve been personally victimized by a fantasy series, and the goblin regrets to inform you that there is no cure — only documentation.
Which is why the Goblin Reader Starter Kit exists. It’s free, it’s printable, and it includes a reading log with an actual column for emotional damage — so the next series that wrecks you gets entered into the official record. There are also bookmarks (including “Emotional Support Book,” which you clearly need) and your Official Goblin Reader Registration, where you can declare your reading alignment under oath.
Join the Goblin Horde. We have grievances, and we file them properly.
Which series victimized YOU? Name and shame in the comments – the goblin is keeping a list.
